A group of Egyptian activists prepare themselves to enter an area of clashes on nearby Kasr el Ainy street, near Cairo's Tahrir Square, December 17, 2011...Uniformed and plain-clothed officers took up positions on rooftops above the protests to throw stones, broken glass, plates and furniture at the activists below. Protesters took shelter behind sheets of corrugated iron, wooden blocks and street signs, creating 'safe' positions to return fire with Molotov cocktails and pieces of broken pavement...The number of dead had risen to at least nine on Saturday night as protesters clashed with Military Police and plain-clothed assailants, or 'baltaigiya' for a second day.
